Race Photos from the Past
HOME
I starting racing Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) with my father and brother in 1990 at age 18.
After great seasons in 90, 91 and 92 I was being offered all kinds of deals to "move up" the ladder.
The problem was no matter how many races I won, the bottom line was without a half million dollars some other kid with that $500,000 was going to get the ride and I was going to watch.
So I quit at the end of October 1992, totally disgusted.
By December I was out back of the Atlantic Dodge Body Shop, building myself a
Dodge Aspen Hobby Stock. I wish I had a quarter for all the people who
stopped by and told me that a Dodge Aspen would make a terrible race car.
When St Augustine Speedway (a dirt 1/2 mile) opened in 1993,
I went to the first race with some old bald tires.
Never driven an oval track, never driven on dirt. I think I finished 5th or 6th.
For the next week, the bald tires came off, some new "Grand Prix"
street tires went on, and we went on to win 5 of the first 10 races.
In 1994, I bought a (very) used Modified and raced it on dirt and pavement until 1997, when I took some time off due to an injury (see BIO page). Been racing Dirt and Pavement Mods since then.
This was a the old Charolotte Motor Speedway (now called LOWES).
It was 1991, it had just rained, and it was about freezing.
Of all my experiences, driving those banks on wet pavement remain etched in my mind as pretty thrilling.
This is my father, my brother and I, in 1991.
We were the first family ever to have three drivers all qualify
for the National Runoffs in the same season.
1990 - Rookie Year, Leading the Pack at Road Atlanta
In late 1992 I ran four "Formula 2000" races.
I won the first two, was leading by almost a lap in the third when a lapped car took me out,
and shortly after this picture was taken
(at Sebring International Raceway) I wrecked in the last race I ran.
I didn't have the budget to continue my climb in SportsCars, and so .... look below
Built it myself, crewed it myself, no spares, no worries.
Some of the best memories I have, 1993
This was also the first time #4 appeared as my car number.
1995, new body on that poor old Modified.

First Win after coming back
Man, it felt great.
2001 St Augustine Speedway
1994.
A 5 or 6 year old Blair Modified, that I raced on both the dirt at St Augustine and when it rained out there (which it did alot in 94) I would tape the windshield in, change two shocks, bolt on a swaybar and drive an hour south to the 1/2 mile pavement at Volusia County Speedway.
We didnt win any features, and just a few heat races ....
but in cubic fun and learning experience, these days were priceless.
We also really annoyed a bunch of better funded and more experienced teams by beating them.
Bonus !
